About the species

Zebra snail - Neritina sp. zebra Algae eating shell from Asia Temp: 18-26°C Length: 2.5cm

The zebra snail, or Neritina natalensis sp. "Zebra" as it is actually called, is an effective algae eater in the nano aquarium. It got its name thanks to the beautiful zebra pattern in black and gold. It is one of the most popular snails in aquariums.

It can do well on the algae it finds on the aquarium glass and on stones and plants in the aquarium, but it is recommended that you also feed it algae tablets or the like. Also keep in mind that it is unable to eat algae from small-leaved plants due to its size. The snail grows to about 2.5 cm in the aquarium.

FAQ about Zebra snail

Is Sebrasnäcka a good algae eater?

It grazes on biofilm and many soft algae coatings on glass and décor. It does not replace normal maintenance and needs supplementary food if natural grazing is scarce.

Does Sebrasnäcka reproduce in freshwater?

Nerite-type snails may lay eggs in freshwater, but their larvae normally require brackish or salt water. A growing population is therefore unlikely in freshwater.

Does Sebrasnäcka need extra calcium?

Stable mineral content and dietary calcium help maintain a strong, healthy shell. Avoid very acidic, mineral-poor water.

Can Sebrasnäcka leave the aquarium?

Yes, snails may climb above the waterline. Use a lid and check water quality if a snail repeatedly tries to leave.
