Limnobium laevigatum

Product description

About the species

Limnobium laevigatum from South America is a decorative floating plant that is particularly suitable for open aquariums. 1-5 cm high and the leaves from 5-15 cm wide.

It is also good in traditional aquariums, as the fine, long and decorative roots provide shelter for gouramies and other surface fish that like the roots of floating plants. If there are enough nutrients in the water and the light intensity is good, new leaves will appear above the water surface.

It may be necessary to remove some to avoid the plants underneath still getting some light. As the nutrient level in the water decreases, it will grow much more slowly making it an excellent indicator of available nutrients.

FAQ about Limnobium laevigatum

How do I place Limnobium laevigatum?

Place it freely on the water surface with roots hanging down. Do not bury it, and leave open areas so it cannot cover the entire aquarium.

What lighting suits Limnobium laevigatum?

Provide steady light but avoid intense heat directly above the leaves. Floating plants prefer a calm surface without heavy splashing or condensation on their leaves.

Does Limnobium laevigatum need CO₂?

No, floating plants take carbon dioxide directly from the air. Regular access to nutrients in the water is more important for steady growth.

How do I stop Limnobium laevigatum from taking over?

Thin it regularly so light and gas exchange can reach the surface. Remove excess carefully and leave enough open water for other plants and animals.
