About the species
The Amano shrimp (Caridina multidentata) is one of the most prized freshwater shrimp in the aquarium hobby and is known for its outstanding ability to keep the aquarium clean of algae and organic waste. Thanks to its constant activity and large appetite for algae, it is a popular choice for both beginners and experienced aquarists.
Unlike many other dwarf shrimp, the Amano shrimp is an effective algae eater even as an adult. It helps keep plants, roots, rocks and decorations free of soft algal deposits while taking care of feed residues and other organic matter that can otherwise degrade water quality.
The Amano shrimp is peaceful, social and works well in companion aquariums with other shrimp, shellfish and peaceful fish species. It thrives best in groups and then shows its natural behavior by actively searching for food all over the aquarium. It is a fascinating species to study as it is constantly on the move and exploring its surroundings.
For best comfort, a well-run aquarium with plenty of plants, moss, roots and other natural hiding places is recommended. Living plants not only provide protection but also create surfaces where biofilm and microorganisms can develop, which form an important part of the shrimp's natural diet.
Amano shrimp are robust and adaptable but appreciate stable water values and good water quality. They thrive in temperatures between 20–28°C and prefer oxygen-rich water with some circulation. Like other invertebrates, they are sensitive to copper and should never be exposed to drugs or water treatment products that contain copper.
Although Amano shrimp can reproduce in aquariums, the larvae require brackish water to develop into adult shrimp, meaning that the species does not normally reproduce in regular freshwater aquariums. This makes them an excellent choice for aquarists who want effective algae eaters without the risk of uncontrolled population growth.
With its combination of utility, activity and endurance, the Amano shrimp is one of the most valuable inhabitants you can have in a plant aquarium and an obvious choice for those who want to create a clean, lively and well-balanced aquarium.
