Tiger shell (Neritina sp. Tiger) is a popular, efficient algae-eating freshwater snail. They are excellent "cleaning patrols" that eat algae on glass, furnishings and plants, and grow to be about 1-3 cm in size. They do not breed in fresh water and are peaceful towards fish and shrimp.
It grazes on biofilm and many soft algae coatings on glass and décor. It does not replace normal maintenance and needs supplementary food if natural grazing is scarce.
Does Tigersnäcka reproduce in freshwater?
Nerite-type snails may lay eggs in freshwater, but their larvae normally require brackish or salt water. A growing population is therefore unlikely in freshwater.
Does Tigersnäcka need extra calcium?
Stable mineral content and dietary calcium help maintain a strong, healthy shell. Avoid very acidic, mineral-poor water.
Can Tigersnäcka leave the aquarium?
Yes, snails may climb above the waterline. Use a lid and check water quality if a snail repeatedly tries to leave.
