About the species
In the Neocaridina genus there are two interesting species for us aquarists: Neocaridina davidi and Neocaridina palmata (White Pearl). Neocaridina is perfect as a beginner shrimp and is available in several different patterns and colors. It is a robust and productive genus of dwarf shrimp.
Color & behavior
We are often asked if you can mix the colors, and yes – you can if you want a colorful aquarium. However, you should bear in mind that over time the shrimp can lose their intense color and return to a more natural, camouflaged color.
Neocaridina are very peaceful and thrive best in groups of at least 10 individuals. They work well with shellfish and small peaceful fish.
Reproduction
The species is easy to grow and you will most likely get sea urchins. A female carries about 30–50 eggs for 20–30 days. The shrimp are born fully developed and are approximately 3 mm in size.
Environment & aquarium
Neocaridina are very adaptable and can handle many different water values. Regular tap water, bottom substrate, a mushroom filter and plants and decor are often enough.
The shrimp do better with lots of hiding places. An aquarium of 20-30 liters is enough to start, but the population can quickly grow - then a larger aquarium may be needed.
Feed
Neocaridina is omnivorous and naturally feeds on biofilm in the aquarium. However, this is rarely enough for an entire colony.
Supplement with shrimp feed and vegetables such as zucchini, carrot, broccoli and green peas. Always use organic alternatives.
