About the species
Antenna Black and gold snail, Clithon Snails are smaller snails of golden yellow color with black stripes. However, there are many color variations within this genus. They belong to the larger Nerit family. Their beautiful shell is decorated with characteristic spines, the size and number of which vary.
They are diligent algae eaters that keep aquarium glass, rocks and decorations clean and free of green spots. Thanks to these characteristics, they are ideal for smaller aquariums with aquascaping. It is recommended to keep them in groups of 3 specimens and in aquariums with a capacity of 20 liters.
Clithon snails tend to climb above the surface of the water, so it is recommended to keep the aquarium well covered. They mainly eat algae, but it is good to have dry leaves in the aquarium as emergency food, even if they only sporadically eat food scraps.
They are not demanding in terms of water parameters and under good conditions they can grow up to 3 cm and live up to 4 years. The spines on their shells are relatively fragile, and it is unfortunately common for them to break during transport or when they fall to the bottom of an aquarium.
Clithon females lay eggs from which larvae develop in brackish water. They do not breed in fresh water, so there is no risk of overpopulation. Water requirements: Fresh water and brackish water
