About the species

Taxiphyllum barbieri - Java moss from our own cultivation

Portion of about 1 dl Java moss, fast growing moss Java moss, or Taxiphyllum barbieri / Vesicularia dubyana is a very grateful plant in the nano aquarium. You can let it grow firmly on roots or stones with the help of some sewing thread or thin fishing line. After a while it covers the root or stone and may need to be cut down.

Java moss can also be used as a floating plant that grows freely under the surface of the aquarium. Java moss also provides hiding places for fish and shrimp in the aquarium. Java moss does not require a special water quality, but prefers a pH value of around 6-8 and a water temperature of 20-28ºC. It grows more slowly in warmer water.

It is quite easy to obtain from well-stocked aquarium stores.

FAQ about Java Moss

How do I attach Java Mossa?

Divide the moss into thin portions and attach it to rock or wood with thread or aquarium-safe glue. Thin layers receive better circulation and usually grow more evenly.

Does Java Mossa need CO₂?

Most aquarium mosses grow without added CO₂, but steady CO₂, balanced nutrition and stable lighting can produce denser growth.

How do I keep Java Mossa looking good?

Trim regularly and remove loose pieces and debris. Good circulation around the moss reduces trapped dirt that can inhibit growth.
