Product description

About the species

Phoenix moss also called Fissidens Fontanus moss from our own cultivation.

1 portion of Phoenix Mossa, approx. 1 tablespoon of this truly exclusive moss.

Phoenix Moss (Fissidens Fontanus) is a freshwater moss. It is a fluffy, green plant that attaches and grows on many surfaces. It can grow into a large mat to provide refuge for juvenile fish and shrimp. It can also be a good grazing area for shrimp. It gets its Latin name from its appearance.

It looks like a fountain, growing from the center and sprouting in different directions. Phoenix Moss is part of the Fissidentaceae family. There are about 400 kinds of plants in the family, and it is one of the more popular plants in the group. It is also one of the largest. Phoenix Moss comes from North America.

It is a slow growing plant that will grow on driftwood and rocks. Phoenix Mossa needs a clean tank, otherwise algae can start to grow and settle on the moss leaves. Cherry shrimp or other neocaridina shrimp are often in tanks with Phoenix Mossan because organic matter is the perfect food.

Likewise for all the caridina shrimp that light up the aquarium as they clear the moss. Filtration is a must. It cleans the water and creates a certain water flow. If filtration is not part of the tank, the plant will begin to absorb the organic matter. It is not good for the plant. The water stream should not be too strong.

Moderate movement throughout the tank gives this plant the best environment.

FAQ about Phoenix Moss

How do I attach Phoenix Mossa?

Divide the moss into thin portions and attach it to rock or wood with thread or aquarium-safe glue. Thin layers receive better circulation and usually grow more evenly.

Does Phoenix Mossa need CO₂?

Most aquarium mosses grow without added CO₂, but steady CO₂, balanced nutrition and stable lighting can produce denser growth.

How do I keep Phoenix Mossa looking good?

Trim regularly and remove loose pieces and debris. Good circulation around the moss reduces trapped dirt that can inhibit growth.

Is the moss suitable for a shrimp aquarium?

Yes, moss provides a large biofilm grazing area and fine hiding places for shrimplets. Always check that the plant is clean before adding it to the aquarium.
