Aegagropila linnaei is not really a plant, but a 3-10 cm sphere of algae. A decorative exception to the rule of avoiding algae at all costs. It is usually found in shallow lakes where the wave motion creates the round shape. In the aquarium, it should be turned regularly to maintain the spherical shape.

Aegagropila linnaei can be divided into smaller pieces, which take on a spherical shape over time, or which form a flat, robust growth that can be attached to roots and rocks. Also called algae ball or globular algae
